About

The experimental results in plasma physics over the last decade indicate that fusion can be an energy source, and the challenge now is to develop the engineering systems that surround and support the burning plasma, and to convert the fusion power to electricity, safely, reliably, and economically.

The vision of an attractive fusion energy source can only be developed via an integrated partnership involving fusion plasma, nuclear science, and enabling technology. Many of the formidable challenges ahead for fusion energy are at the engineering/plasma interface and in developing new technologies from concept to practical reality. Ingenuity is the catalyst for technological innovations in fusion to overcome these hurdles.

VLT provides the framework to emphasize fusion engineering, material science, plasma engineering, and enabling technologies that benefit both magnetic and inertial fusion energy sciences.
